Télécoms Sans Frontières, the emergency telecommunications NGO supported by Vizada, has completed its mission in Peru, where traditional network infrastructures had been seriously affected by the earthquake of the 15th August.
TSF's team set up two emergency telecoms centers the day after the earthquake providing BGAN and RBGAN terminals as well as Mini-M satellite phones.
These centers offered Internet access, voice and fax lines via satellite to the whole humanitarian community during the disaster response phase. At least 17 organizations involved in relief operations such as the United Nations Disaster and Assessment Coordination teams (UNDAC), the World Food Program (WFP), the International Federation of the Red Cross, Oxfam or Médecins du Monde Spain benefited from these centers.
With an average number of 30 to 40 daily users, these centers enabled aid agencies to better coordinate operations on the ground. By sending assessments and reports on the situation, they were also able to better respond to the needs of the affected populations.
In total during the 35-day mission, TSF enabled aid agencies to exchange more than 3,400 MB of data to be exchanged and provided approximately 100 free hours of voice communications.
TSF also offered the possibility for 600 affected families to contact a family member or friend to give news or request personalized assistance.
