200 pirogue canoes and 30 dhows will cross the starting line of the Malagasy Cup, a 200 km race along the world’s third largest reef from Anakao to Andavadoaka in southwest Madagascar. This competition offers a unique opportunity to showcase the traditional sailing boats of the Vezo “people of the sea” as well as the preserved landscape of this region.
The organizers have called on Satellite Air Time and Vizada to manage the race communications that ensure the safety of the competitors on sea and land, and communicate photos and videos from these highly remote areas.
Iridium satellite telephones will enable competitors and organizers to stay in permanent contact with the capital city Antananarivo.
The BGAN service will also allow journalists following the race to send video and photo reports from the race’s five staging point villages. This laptop-sized satellite terminal uses high-speed internet connections of up to 492 kbps to send large volume of data in areas lacking mainstream telecommunications networks.
The Satellite Air Time team will be on hand to help journalists send their reports and participate in the success of international competition via television networks.
